Words I never expected to hear myself say

"Boy, I can't wait to go cross-country skiing soon."
Not telemark skiing. Not back-country skiing. Not ice climbing. Not winter camping. None of that.
No, the exact words were I can't wait to go cross-country skiing soon.
I'm almost embarrassed. Granted, I can see myself back-country skiing in order to winter camp.

and that's embarassing because... hmm, perhaps an avid snow-shoer is not the best person to discuss this with?

Well, the snowshoers I know are hard-core, and will go on for hours about titanium frames and all that.
Whereas x-country, well, that's different.

oh... all I know is, we bought these really cool snowshoes and we go out in the woods where there's tons of snow and i run with the Kid (not easy in two feet of fluff!) and we have a blast. we go up and down the mountains and we get off the paths because we can't see them, we try to hide (but we leave behind a huge trail - only a child would get surprised, and he does) from each other and make crow noises. and sometimes we make snow women (i add boobs)...
I can't wait!

Nothing wrong with x-country skiing! Where are you going?

Pretty much wherever there's snow. However, I am partial to the Adirondacks: there's a route that goes up to Avalanche Pass. It's a long haul, but so worth it when you end up at a mountain lake surrounded by cliffs.
